Perpetual Calendar:

This calendar allows you to determine the date of any time during the Julian and Gregorian Calendar period and is based on the English conversion date to the Gregorian system.

First, choose your year from the chart below, then note the calendar letter in the first row.

Note that although the Julian Period was adopted in 45 BC, there was an error in that leap years were made every three years instead of four at first. This was corrected by not having any leap years between 9BC and AD 8.

For example, suppose you want to find out when April 1, 33 AD occured. You look at the top line for the column 33AD is in and you see "E". Then in the second table, you look under column "E" for April, and it says use Calendar 4. Then you see by Calendar 4 that April 1st was a Wednesday.

Years in brackets are the “Julian proleptic calendar,” and are what was the original plan for the Julian Calendar were:

For years between 2201 and 2600, subtract 400 and use the numbers above. For years above 2600, subtract 400 until you get to between 1801 and 2200.

There is some discussion regarding making the year 4000 and multiples thereof as common years, instead of leap years, but this has not been officially adopted. Thus, dates beyond Feb. 28, 4,000 are uncertain.

Next, take the letter and look in the column for the month to get which calendar to use. In early times and currently, Jan. 1 is the beginning of the year, but from the 12th century until 1751, the legal year in England began on March 25th. Most countries changed the start of the year back to Jan. 1 before they adopted the Gregorian calendar. For example, Scotland changed the start of the Scottish New Year to 1 January in 1600 (this means that 1599 was a short year). England, Ireland and the British colonies changed the start of the year to 1 January in 1752 (so 1751 was a short year with only 282 days):
